‘Cupriferous’ pyrite

‘Cupriferous’ pyrite

Ore deposit type: Hydrothermal associated with magmatism, volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS)

Provenance: Alagna Valsesia (Piedmont, NW Italy)

Description: : Laminated ore with dominant pyrite (anhedral to euhedral, yellow, metallic) and minor chalcopyrite (not visible) in albite chlorite schist. The mineralization originally formed syngenetically on a seafloor rich in volcanoclastic sediments and was subsequently metamorphosed during the Alpine orogeny. The metamorphism caused the recrystallisation and coarsening of pyrite.
