Laminated sulphides in black shale

Laminated sulphides in black shale

Ore deposit type: Hydrothermal in sedimentary environments, sedimentary-exhalative (SEDEX) type

Provenance: Neues Lager, Liegenden-Rammelsberg, Germany

Description: Alternating layers rich in fine-grained pyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite in a black shale. Note the essentially syngenetic character of the sulphide mineralisation, controlled by subsequent events of chemical and clastic sedimentation, and the abundant sedimentary structures. Nonetheless, pyrite appears to have been at least in part remobilised/recrystallised into (sub)millimetric grains.
