Gold-bearing metaconglomerate

Gold-bearing metaconglomerate

Ore deposit type: Clastic in sedimentary environments (placer)

Provenance: Witwatersrand, South Africa

Description: Gold ore with pyrite (yellow, with metallic luster) disseminated in metaconglomerate composed of lithic clasts (mostly quartz) in quartz matrix. The interstitial pyrite is in part clastic and syngenetic, as suggested by the coarse rounded polycrystalline aggregates, and in part epigenetic, consisting of impregnations related to metamorphic remobilization. The gold grains are not macroscopically visible.
